Viral Bread Video Sparks Food Safety Debate as NAFDAC Clears Bon Bread

Viral Bread Video Raises Questions About Food Safety in Nigeria

A video of bread that reportedly stayed fresh for over two months has caused a lot of discussion among Nigerians. Many people have started asking questions about the ingredients used in making bread, especially preservatives and how safe they are for consumers.

The video was posted by a Nigerian shop owner, Love Dooshimaa. In the clip, she showed a loaf of sliced bread which she claimed had been kept in her shop for more than two months. According to her, the bread still looked fresh and had no visible mould or unpleasant smell.

After the video went viral, many Nigerians became curious about how bread could remain in good condition for such a long time. Some people questioned whether the preservatives used by bakeries were responsible for keeping it fresh.

The Disagreement Between the Woman and the Bakery

Following the attention the video received, Bon Bread reportedly recognised its product as the bread shown in the clip. The bakery contacted Love Dooshimaa and asked her to take down the video.

However, she maintained that she did not mention the bakery's name or show its logo when making the video.

The disagreement later resulted in legal action, with Bon Bread reportedly demanding ₦50 million in damages. The company claimed that the video had affected its reputation and caused harm to its business.

The situation attracted even more attention online, as Nigerians shared different opinions about the matter.

What NAFDAC Discovered

The issue also attracted the attention of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

On May 18, 2026, NAFDAC announced the results of its investigation into the matter. According to the agency, the tested Bon Bread samples met the required safety standards.

NAFDAC also explained that the calcium propionate used in the bread as a preservative was within the approved limit.

This finding was important because the fact that bread remains fresh for a long time does not automatically mean that it is harmful or unsafe to eat.

Why the Issue Matters to Nigerians

Bread is one of the foods commonly eaten in Nigerian homes. This is why the incident has made many people more interested in understanding what goes into the food they buy.

Preservatives are sometimes added to bread to prevent mould and help it last longer. However, they must be used properly and within the limits approved by food safety authorities.

The incident has also reminded people to pay attention to food labels, production dates and expiry dates before buying packaged products.

Although consumers have the right to ask questions about the food they eat, it is also important to confirm information before making public accusations against a business.

Overall, the incident has shown how important food safety awareness is in Nigeria. It also reminds consumers that proper investigations and reliable information are necessary when dealing with concerns about the quality of food products.
