Kenya brings in health cover rule for visitors
Anyone planning a trip to Kenya now has another important travel requirement to consider: health insurance.
The Kenyan government has introduced mandatory health insurance for foreign visitors, with the requirement taking effect on October 5, 2026. The new rule affects tourists, business travellers, Africans living abroad and other international visitors planning short-term stays in the country.
For people travelling to Kenya to visit family, attend business meetings or enjoy a holiday, understanding the new requirement before booking a flight could help prevent unnecessary travel complications.
##What Does the New Rule Say?
Under the new policy, eligible foreign nationals visiting Kenya for less than 12 months must obtain individual inbound travel health insurance.
The required insurance provides a minimum cumulative benefit of US$50,000 per traveller. It is intended to cover medical treatment, emergency medical transportation, prescribed medicines, mental health treatment and repatriation of mortal remains.
The requirement also applies to eligible children above the age of three, with individual insurance documentation required.
Travellers should not assume that their existing international travel insurance automatically meets Kenya’s requirements. They should confirm the accepted insurance arrangements through the official government platform before departure.
##Who Does the Rule Affect?
The policy generally affects non-Kenyan nationals entering the country for stays of less than 12 months.
This includes tourists visiting for holidays, business travellers attending conferences, Africans in the diaspora visiting relatives and other international visitors.
However, not everyone entering Kenya is covered by the requirement. Exemptions include Kenyan citizens, people with valid Kenyan residence status, citizens of East African Community partner states, asylum seekers, certain diplomatic passport holders, qualifying transport crew members and transit passengers who do not enter Kenya.
For African travellers, it is particularly important to check their eligibility rather than assume that all nationalities are treated equally.
##What Should Travellers Check Before Flying?
Before travelling, visitors should take a few minutes to confirm that they meet the new requirements.
First, check whether your nationality or immigration status qualifies for an exemption. If you are required to obtain insurance, confirm the approved provider and coverage requirements through Kenya’s official government platform.
Make sure the policy meets the minimum US$50,000 benefit requirement and that your insurance certificate is available electronically or in printed form.
Travellers should also check with their airlines whether proof of insurance will be required during check-in or boarding.
Most importantly, confirm the exact implementation date and the latest entry requirements before departure. Government travel rules can change, and information published before implementation may no longer reflect current arrangements.
##Where Can Travellers Get More Information?
Visitors can check the latest requirements through Kenya’s official Electronic Travel Authorisation portal and government travel information pages.
They can also consult Kenya’s Ministry of Health and its diplomatic missions for clarification.
The introduction of mandatory health insurance means that travellers must now pay closer attention to their medical coverage when planning a visit to Kenya. Checking the requirements early, rather than waiting until the airport, can help make the journey smoother.
