Stellenbosch Strike Late to Knock Durban City out
Stellenbosch beat Durban City two to zero on Wednesday night(Twenty eight of October two thousand and twenty six)to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup. But the scoreline does not tell the full story of what was a very tight contest at Chatsworth Stadium.
For most of the match, both teams struggled to find a breakthrough. The first half ended goalless, and it began to look as though another draw result was coming. The previous three meetings between these teams had all ended without a goal.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
In the eighty fourth minute, substitute Kazeem Adeyanju delivered a dangerous ball into the area, and Sinoxolo Kwayiba finished it to put Stellenbosch ahead. Durban City pushed forward desperately for an equaliser, but that left space at the back.
Deep into stoppage time, Stellenbosch attacked again. Kwayiba scored his second goal to complete a memorable 2 to 0 victory and send his team into the last eight.
At the end of this interesting game, much of the talking point was about Stellenbosch’s late impact. Coach Gavin Hunt praised the substitutes for making a difference, while the two late goals showed why knockout football can change within minutes.
For Durban City, the defeat means their Carling Knockout journey is over. Their attention now turns back to the Betway Premiership, where they face Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.
Stellenbosch also have only a little time to celebrate. They face Chippa United in the league on Saturday before continuing their cup journey.
And the next Carling Knockout challenge is already waiting: Stellenbosch have been drawn at home against AmaZulu in the quarter-finals.
As I came to a conclusion, one thing is certain—Stellenbosch have shown that in knockout football, the game is never over until the final whistle.
