Super Falcons cash reward sparks fresh talk
Super Falcons Reward Sparks Fresh Talk
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have begun receiving their long-awaited financial rewards following their historic victory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), sparking fresh discussions about athlete welfare and government support for women’s football.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed on November 2, 2026, that President Bola Tinubu had fulfilled his promise to reward the players for winning their record-extending 10th continental title.
What Was Paid?
Each Super Falcons player is receiving the naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the technical crew are entitled to $50,000 each.
Reports have placed the players’ payments at approximately ₦134 million to ₦140 million, depending on the exchange rate used. The original presidential promise was $100,000 per player.
The reward follows Nigeria’s remarkable 3-2 comeback victory against hosts Morocco in the WAFCON final on July 26, 2025.
Nigeria had initially fallen two goals behind before Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini scored to secure the championship.
Why Nigerians Are Reacting
The payment has generated excitement among football supporters, many of whom believe the players deserve recognition for their dedication and outstanding performance.
However, the timing has also attracted attention. The reward was announced in July 2025, but the players reportedly waited more than a year before receiving the cash component.
The delay has renewed discussions about the importance of fulfilling promises to Nigerian athletes promptly, rather than allowing financial rewards to remain outstanding for months or years.
What It Means for Women’s Football
The financial reward represents an important recognition of the Super Falcons’ contribution to Nigerian sports.
Beyond the cash payment, the players and officials had earlier received promises of three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
While the reward is encouraging, football supporters will also want to see sustained investment in women’s football, including improved facilities, grassroots development, better welfare and opportunities for young female players.
For aspiring footballers across Nigeria, the Super Falcons’ achievement demonstrates that dedication and teamwork can bring national recognition.
The latest payment may strengthen confidence among athletes, but continued support will be essential to ensure that Nigerian women’s football remains competitive on the international stage.
