For one night, Lagos had a governor turned model.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu surprised everyone on Saturday night, October 31, when he walked the runway at 2026 Lagos Fashion Week at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island. The clip went viral within hours.

Sanwo-Olu walked for popular Nigerian menswear designer Ugo Monye, who has been dressing big names since 2009. This was the closing night of the main runway shows. The 2026 edition ran from October 28 to November 1 under the theme “CRAFTED: Heritage. Innovation. Circular Futures” with over 60 designers.

Dressed in a regal off-white flowing caftan with embroidered details blended with a kimono style, and a beige fedora, Sanwo-Olu strode confidently, flashing peace signs and nodding to cheering fans. He later walked hand-in-hand with Ugo Monye as the audience roared.

He posted it himself on X and Instagram:

“I stepped away from the usual business of governance to walk the runway for the incredibly talented Ugo Monye at Lagos Fashion Week. Full-time Governor, full-time public servant and for one night, part-time model. I had a really good time.”

This is actually his second time. His first runway was in October 2023 when he closed for designer Emmy Kasbit in a light blue patterned blazer.

How people reacted online

The reaction was mostly love and banter.

On X, Instagram and TikTok, fans dropped comments like “Mr Sellable,” “Governor with drip,” and “Eko for show.” Many praised him for supporting local talent. Nollywood star Funke Akindele and media personality Do2dtun reacted with laughing and clapping emojis.

Of course, some critics said governors should focus on governance, but even they admitted the walk was confident. The memes did what fashion weeks want: made Lagos Fashion Week trend beyond fashion pages into general gist blogs.

Why Lagos Fashion Week keeps drawing big names

Lagos Fashion Week, founded in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele, is now Africa’s biggest fashion marketplace. It connects designers with buyers, retailers, investors and global media.

It keeps drawing big names because:
- Lagos is branding itself as Africa’s fashion capital
- Politicians see it as a soft-power way to support the creative economy, which Lagos State actively funds
- For designers like Ugo Monye, Fruché and Ejiro Amos Tafiri who showed on the final night, a governor on the runway means instant press and buyer attention

In short, the surprise walk was politics, promotion and pure showbiz in one.
