Red Arrows knock out Kaizer Chiefs

DURBAN, South Africa — Zambia’s Red Arrows have knocked Kaizer Chiefs out of the CAF Confederation Cup after winning a tense penalty shootout, delivering a major CAF upset that left the South African club and its supporters disappointed.

The Red Arrows vs Kaizer Chiefs clash ended 1–0 in favour of Chiefs after 90 minutes, leaving the aggregate score tied at 1–1. With neither side able to settle the contest in normal time, the match went to penalties, where Red Arrows held their nerve to win 3–2 and book their place in the group stage.

Kaizer Chiefs went into the match knowing they had to fight back after losing the first leg. Playing in front of their home supporters, the South African side was eager to keep its continental hopes alive. However, Red Arrows refused to make things easy for the hosts.

Chiefs finally gave their fans something to celebrate in the 66th minute. Bradley Cross rose to head home a free-kick delivered by substitute Mfundo Vilakazi, bringing the tie level on aggregate and giving the home side renewed hope.

The goal lifted the atmosphere in the stadium, but Chiefs could not find the second goal they needed to secure qualification without penalties. Despite pushing for a decisive breakthrough, they were unable to make their chances count before the final whistle.

The pressure then shifted to the penalty spot, where Red Arrows proved more composed. The Zambian side scored enough penalties to claim a 3–2 victory, while Chiefs struggled to convert their opportunities. The result brought their CAF Confederation Cup campaign to a disappointing end.

The Kaizer Chiefs knockout is a painful setback for a club that had hoped to progress further in African competition. The defeat also shows how difficult continental football can be, especially when a match is decided by small margins and every missed chance matters.

For Chiefs, attention will now turn to their domestic campaign. The coaching staff will need to examine what went wrong, particularly the team's inability to score again after Cross's goal and its struggles during the shootout.

Red Arrows, meanwhile, have every reason to celebrate. Eliminating a well-known South African club away from home is a significant achievement and gives the Zambian side fresh confidence ahead of the group stage.

In the end, this CAF upset is a reminder that football is not decided by reputation alone. Red Arrows took their opportunity when it mattered most, while Kaizer Chiefs were left to reflect on a night when their continental ambitions slipped away.
