Nairobi Flood Videos Spread Online After Heavy Overnight Rains Disrupt Movement Across the City

Heavy overnight rainfall left parts of Nairobi struggling with flooding on Saturday, October 31, as residents took to social media to share videos and pictures showing the impact of the downpour.

By Saturday morning, several roads had become difficult to navigate, with motorists and pedestrians dealing with waterlogged streets. What started as a night of rain quickly became a talking point online, as Kenyans shared clips showing just how much the rainfall had affected different parts of the capital.

According to a report by Citizen Digital, the rainfall followed a weather forecast issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department. The department had predicted showers across much of Nairobi County, with most areas expected to receive between 5mm and 20mm of rain.

What People Shared Online

As the rain eased, videos and photographs began appearing on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Some showed flooded roads, while others highlighted how difficult it had become for people to move around the city.

The scenes attracted attention because they showed a problem many Nairobi residents have experienced during periods of heavy rainfall: roads that are normally busy and accessible can quickly become difficult to use when water accumulates.

Reports by Pulse Kenya identified Githurai Roundabout, Parklands and Westlands among the areas affected by the downpour. At Githurai, sections of the busy transport hub were submerged, leaving motorists struggling to pass through. In Parklands and Westlands, water-covered roads also disrupted movement for drivers and pedestrians.

Another report by The Star Kenya highlighted flooding along the Thika Road corridor and footage of a bus that appeared to be stuck in a ditch along Uhuru Highway.

Why the Videos Spread So Quickly

There is a reason weather-related videos often attract so much attention online. Unlike ordinary news updates, a short video can show people what is happening on the ground almost immediately.

For someone living in Nairobi, seeing a familiar road covered in water can be more concerning than simply reading that heavy rain has fallen. It also helps people understand why their usual routes may be difficult to use.

Social media makes it easy for these clips to move from one person to another within minutes. People share them to inform friends and family, warn commuters and draw attention to conditions in their neighbourhoods.

However, not every video shared online necessarily belongs to the latest incident. Some old clips can resurface during new rainfall events, which makes checking the original source and date especially important.

Questions About Nairobi's Drainage System

Beyond the videos themselves, the flooding has brought renewed attention to Nairobi's drainage infrastructure and preparedness for heavy rainfall.

When rainwater collects faster than drainage channels can carry it away, roads and surrounding areas can quickly become flooded. The consequences are not limited to traffic delays. Businesses may struggle to operate, pedestrians may find it difficult to reach their destinations, and residents can face unexpected disruption to their daily routines.

The latest scenes have also prompted questions about whether existing drainage improvements and preparations are enough to protect the city during the rainy season.

For many residents, the concern is familiar. They want to be able to travel to work, run their businesses and return home without worrying that another heavy downpour will leave their routes flooded.

As more rainfall is forecast in parts of the country, the Nairobi scenes serve as a reminder of the importance of proper drainage, reliable weather information and public awareness.

For now, the videos circulating online have done more than capture a rainy morning. They have reopened an important conversation about how prepared one of East Africa's busiest cities is for heavy rainfall.
