Luanda: Africa’s Next Megacity
Cities in Africa are growing rapidly, and Angola’s capital, Luanda, could soon become one of the continent’s biggest urban centres.
According to a report by Pulse Nigeria published on November 3, 2026, Luanda is projected to overtake Lagos as sub-Saharan Africa’s most populated city by 2050.
A megacity is a city with a population of more than 10 million people. These cities are usually busy centres of business, education, transportation and entertainment. Lagos, Kinshasa and Cairo are examples of African megacities. Luanda is expected to join this group as its population continues to increase.
Luanda is growing because more people are moving to the city in search of better opportunities, including jobs, education, healthcare and improved living conditions. Its economic activities, businesses and development projects also attract people from different parts of Angola.
The World Bank projections reported by Pulse Nigeria, said that Luanda's population could rise from 11.4 million in 2025 to 20.3 million by 2050. This represents an increase of about 78 per cent. Lagos, on the other hand, is projected to reach 16.2 million people within the same period.
The growth of megacities creates both opportunities and challenges for Africans. On the positive side, bigger cities can attract investments, create employment opportunities, support businesses and improve access to schools, hospitals and other services.
For example, a growing city may provide more customers for a small business owner, more job opportunities for graduates and better markets for traders.
However, rapid population growth can also increase traffic congestion, housing shortages, unemployment, pollution and pressure on electricity, water and other public services.
Governments must therefore invest in affordable housing, good roads, reliable public transport and job creation.
In conclusion, Luanda's projected growth shows how quickly Africa is changing. However, becoming a megacity should not only be about having millions of residents. It should also mean better living conditions, stronger economies and more opportunities for everyone.
