Habibat Jinadu Opens Up About Skin Bleaching and Beauty Pressure in Nollywood

Habibat Jinadu's Revelation Sparks Conversation About Beauty Standards in Nollywood

Nollywood actress Habibat Jinadu has opened up about a difficult experience from her acting career, revealing that she once bleached her skin because she believed her complexion was preventing her from getting movie roles.

In an interview with BBC Yoruba, the actress explained that darker-skinned and slim actresses faced difficulties securing opportunities in the Nigerian film industry. According to her, directors often preferred actresses with lighter complexions and fuller bodies.

Jinadu recalled that during movie productions, directors sometimes complained that she was too dark whenever the lights were turned on. She initially tried to ignore the comments, but repeated criticism eventually affected her decisions.

The actress admitted that she decided to bleach her skin because she believed it would improve her chances of getting acting opportunities. She said that after changing her complexion, she began receiving more movie roles.

However, the experience was not entirely positive. Jinadu explained that people sometimes struggled to recognise her outside movie sets. She also revealed that she was unhappy with the decision but continued because she wanted to establish herself in the entertainment industry.

She further disclosed that she began experiencing injuries from minor bruises while working on movie sets. In 2023, after becoming pregnant, she stopped bleaching her skin. Unfortunately, she said that stopping brought another challenge, as some people began insulting her over changes in her appearance.

Why the Issue Is Sensitive

Jinadu's experience has brought attention to colourism, a form of discrimination in which people are treated differently because of their skin tone.

The issue is sensitive because skin colour should not determine someone's opportunities, professional value or acceptance in society.

For actors and actresses, appearance-related expectations can create pressure to change features that are naturally part of who they are. Such expectations can also affect confidence and emotional well-being.

How Nollywood Fans Are Reacting

Her revelation has generated conversations among entertainment followers. According to reports, some social media users believe colourism remains a problem in the entertainment industry, while others have emphasised that nobody should feel ashamed of their natural complexion.

Some people have also praised Jinadu for speaking openly about an experience that many performers may find difficult to discuss.

Her story raises an important question about the standards used when selecting actors for movie roles.

Ultimately, talent and acting ability should remain important considerations in casting decisions. No performer should feel that changing their natural appearance is necessary to receive professional opportunities.
