Champion vs Champion

Champion vs Champion: Sundowns Host USM Alger For CAF Super Cup Glory In Pretoria

My friend, forget the friendly match. This Sunday is a real final. One game, one trophy, no second chance.

On Sunday, November 8, African champions Mamelodi Sundowns will host Algeria's USM Alger in the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

This is not just another match. This is the Champions League winner vs Confederation Cup winner. The best vs the best in Africa.

HOW DID THEY GET HERE?

Sundowns qualified by winning the 2025/26 CAF Champions League, beating Morocco's AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate to win their second Champions League title.

USM Alger qualified by winning the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup, beating Egypt's giants Zamalek on penalties after the final finished 1-1 overall.

Why Sundowns Are Favourites At Home

Look, my friend, I will be honest. On paper, Sundowns should win this. And here is why:

1. Home Advantage Is Real They are playing at Loftus, their own house. Their fans will turn the stadium yellow. USM Alger had to fly from Algeria to Johannesburg on Tuesday, then travel to Pretoria. Long journey, different weather, different pitch.

1. Form Is Hot Sundowns just beat Durban City 4-1 in the league on Saturday, and then beat Golden Arrows 1-0 in the Knockout Cup on Tuesday. They are scoring goals for fun.

USM Alger also came with confidence - they won 2-0 away at CS Constantine - but they will be without forward Houssam Eddine Ghacha, who is out with a knee problem.

1. Experience + Squad Depth Sundowns have been here before. They won this Super Cup in 2017. They know how to handle a one-off final. And they have depth - even if there are fitness doubts over captain Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena, they have players who can step in.

But don't write off USM Alger. They won this same trophy in 2023. They know how to win away. They are physical, disciplined, and they love to frustrate big teams and hit them on the counter. If Sundowns rush, USM will punish them.

WHAT PRIZE MONEY AND TITLE MEAN

This is not just for pride. There is serious money and history on the line.

Winner: $500,000
Runner-up: $250,000
Total prize fund: $750,000

That money matters for both clubs - to pay players, sign new players, and build.

But The Title Means Even More:

If Sundowns win, it will be their 2nd Super Cup - after 2017. It will confirm them as the dominant team in Africa right now, Champions League + Super Cup double.
If USM Alger win, it will also be their 2nd Super Cup - after 2023. It will prove that Algerian football is back at the top.

And for CAF, this match opens the new inter-club season. The winner starts the season as the "Champion of Champions."

WHAT FANS SHOULD WATCH FOR NEXT

This is what you should be looking at on Sunday, not just the score:

1. Sundowns' First 20 Minutes: If Sundowns score early at Loftus, the crowd will push them to finish it. If USM survive the first 20 minutes, the game will get tense.

1. Williams & Mokoena Fitness: Will the captain and midfield engine be fit? If they start, Sundowns are much stronger. Check the team news 1 hour before kick-off.

1. USM's Counter-Attack: Watch how USM defend deep and try to catch Sundowns on the break. One mistake at the back, and it's a goal.

1. Penalties? Remember, no extra time. If it's 1-1 or 0-0 after 90 minutes, we go straight to penalties. So keep your heart strong till the last whistle.

My prediction as your friend? Sundowns at home are hard to beat. But USM Alger did not come to Pretoria to take photos. Expect a tight, physical final.

Who do you think will lift it? Sundowns or USM Alger?
