ASA Names Acting President After Governance Pressure
‎
‎
‎
‎Jean Verster have being appointed the acting president by Athletics South Africa (ASA) amid the growing governance concerns and increasing pressure from international athletics authorities to address leadership challenges within the federation.
‎
‎
‎The appointment, announced on November 2, 2026, comes as the association faces mounting scrutiny over its administrative practices and the suspension of its president, James Moloi, over financial irregularities. Verster, who previously served as the federation’s chair of track and field, will provide interim leadership while the organisation works towards resolving its internal challenges.
‎
‎
‎LEADERSHIP CHANGE FOLLOWS INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE:
‎
‎
‎The leadership development follows concerns raised by World Athletics after a fact-finding mission in September identified serious deficiencies in ASA’s governance and operations.
‎
‎
‎World Athletics subsequently directed the association to enforce Moloi’s removal in line with the findings of a disciplinary committee. The international governing body also gave ASA six months to reform its constitution and conduct fresh elections, warning that failure to comply could result in the federation facing international suspension.
‎
‎
‎The disciplinary committee reportedly found Moloi guilty of unauthorised use of association assets, including alleged personal expenditure using an ASA credit card and receiving an allowance alongside card-funded expenses.
‎
‎
‎VERSTER TAKES INTERIM RESPONSIBILITY:
‎
‎
‎According to ASA, Verster’s appointment followed a board meeting held on October 30, attended by Zakhele Dlamini, president of the Southern African Confederation of Athletics and a representative of World Athletics and the Confederation of African Athletics.
‎
‎
‎Verster’s appointment will remain effective until the ASA council meeting scheduled for November 28, when members are expected to consider the interim leadership arrangement and determine the organisation’s next steps.
‎
‎
‎The association has also announced plans for a strategic planning meeting from November 13 to 15 to develop a roadmap for governance reforms and operational improvements.
‎
‎
‎A CRITICAL MOMENT FOR SOUTH AFRICA
‎ATHLETICS:
‎
‎The leadership transition represents an important opportunity for ASA to rebuild confidence, strengthen accountability and restore stability within South African athletics.
‎
‎
‎Beyond appointing a new leader, the federation must demonstrate its commitment to transparency, institutional reforms and responsible financial management.
‎
‎
‎For South African athletics, the coming months will be crucial. Whether Verster's interim leadership can successfully guide the organisation through its governance challenges remains to be seen.
‎
‎
‎Ultimately, restoring public confidence and meeting international requirements will be essential to protecting the future of athletics in South Africa.
