Why Saka’s Ballon d’Or Win Means Extra to Nigerians
By Tesini Genesis-George
Bukayo Saka’s appearance at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony has a special Nigerian connection, but the Arsenal and England forward did not win the main Ballon d’Or award. Instead, he received the 2026 Sócrates Award, a humanitarian honour presented during the ceremony in London on October 26.
Nigerian music star Burna Boy presented the award to Saka, bringing Nigerian representation in music and football into the spotlight at the international event.
The distinction is important: Harry Kane won the men’s Ballon d’Or, while Spain’s Alexia Putellas received the women’s award. Saka’s recognition was for his charitable work beyond football, particularly his support for children requiring medical treatment.
The Award Moment
The Sócrates Award recognises footballers involved in humanitarian initiatives and social causes. Saka received the 2026 honour for his work with BigShoe, an organisation that supports children in need of medical care.
During the ceremony, Saka shared a letter from a 14-year-old boy in Rwanda whose eyesight improved after receiving treatment through the charity.
Before presenting the award, Burna Boy spoke about his football academy in Nigeria, which he said he established to support football development in his home country. He expressed the hope that one day he would return to the ceremony to see one of his people receive an award.
Saka’s Nigerian Connection
Born in London, Saka represents England internationally, but his Nigerian heritage remains an important part of his identity. Both his parents were born in Nigeria, and he has publicly spoken about his pride in his roots.
His connection to the country also extends beyond his family background. Through his work with BigShoe, he helped fund 120 medical operations for children in Kano State, Nigeria, over the two years preceding February 2024.
The Premier League documented the initiative in February 2024, including Saka’s comments about how special it was to support children in the country connected to his heritage.
His Sócrates Award therefore recognises humanitarian work that has had a direct impact on children in Nigeria, alongside his wider charitable activities.
Online Reactions to Burna Boy’s Appearance
Burna Boy’s appearance at the ceremony also attracted attention online, particularly after he spoke about his ambitions for Nigerian football.
Legit.ng documented selected reactions on X following the singer’s appearance. One user connected his remarks to the possibility of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen winning the Ballon d’Or in the future, while other comments expressed excitement about Burna Boy’s moment at the ceremony.
These responses reflect interest in the wider Nigerian presence at the event, although they should not be taken as evidence of a general reaction to Saka’s award.
Saka’s recognition and Burna Boy’s presentation brought attention to two different aspects of Nigerian representation on the global stage: humanitarian work linked to the country and the ambition to see Nigerian football achieve greater international recognition.
