University of Ghana reopening: UG lectures start date confirmed in Ghana campus news

The University of Ghana is set to reopen on October 19, 2026, with lectures starting a week later on October 26, 2026. The dates are now confirmed and students are watching closely as Ghana campus news returns to normal after weeks of delay.

The reopening and lecture dates

According to Pulse Ghana and the official University of Ghana academic calendar, the 2026/2027 academic year will begin on Monday, October 19, 2026. This is the day students are expected to return to their halls of residence on the Legon campus.

Full academic work will not start immediately. The official calendar published on https://www.ug.edu.gh/ shows that teaching begins on Monday, October 26, 2026. This gives students one week to settle, complete registration, and attend orientation.

The revised schedule was approved by the University’s Business and Executive Committee at a meeting on October 16, 2026. It was signed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Gordon A. Awandare. The schedule was necessary because the academic year was initially supposed to start on October 12 but was postponed.

The reason for the postponement was a nationwide strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators, known as GAUA. The union began its industrial action on August 10, 2026, over market premium payments and salary issues. Pulse Ghana reports that the strike was suspended on October 16, 2026, after the government addressed about 80 percent of their concerns. Members were directed to return to work on October 19, the same day UG reopens.

Other activities in the calendar include random allocation of residential beds on October 16, and freshers orientation from October 21 to October 23, 2026. Matriculation is scheduled for October 31, 2026.

What students need to prepare for

For this University of Ghana reopening, students need to complete three things before lectures start.

  • Pay fees and register online. The university says students must pay the required academic fees and complete registration on the STS portal or DiGradsys portal. Without this, you cannot add or drop courses.
  • Secure accommodation. If you are on campus, check the bed allocation results from October 16. Off-campus students should confirm rent early because many students will arrive at the same time.
  • Prepare for orientation. Level 100 students must attend orientation from October 21 to 23. This is where you will learn about course registration, which runs from October 19 to November 6, 2026.

Continuing students should also note that online course registration and add/drop of courses will be open until November 6.

Why the timeline matters after the break

This timeline matters because it ends weeks of uncertainty for families. The GAUA strike disrupted administrative work in all public universities in Ghana, not just UG. KNUST and others also had to shift their dates. For final year students, the delay affects project work and exam preparation. For freshers, it affects visa, hostel, and travel plans.

The fact that the UG lectures start date is now fixed to October 26 gives a clear one-week buffer for students to report, orient, and register. It also signals that administrative services at the university are back to normal from October 19.
