**University of Ghana calls off ten weeks old strike**.
The University of Ghana has finally set Monday, 19th of October, 2026 as its reopening date for the 2026/2027 academic year, following its postponement of the earlier date of 12th October.
This followed the suspension of the on-going strike action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators, GAUA, led by Rev. K Karikari Amoah, during their October 16th, 2026 meeting.
It will be recalled that the Ghana Association of University Administrators, GAUA, declared an indefinite strike on Monday, 10th of August 2026, following a failed negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, a body saddled with the task of adjusting and approving salaries for all Ghanaian workers, for:
- improved disparities in Market Premium and Allowance between teaching and non-teaching senior staff, after it had dropped from 114% of basic salary, to a paltry less than 25% currently, while the teaching staff still get higher premium.
- wrongly placing the non-teaching staff on the Single Spine Salary Structure, SSSS.
- non-payment/implementation of 40% increment negotiated for professionals in the technical and public universities, among other grievances.
But, rising from their October 16th, 2026 meeting, the National Executive Council of the University administrators declared that their evaluation of the conditions leading to the strike action has been 80% met, as all their grievances are either completely resolved, or are under favourable negotiations for complete resolution as well, which makes up the remainder 20%, thus, setting Monday 19th October, 2026 , a realistic resumption date for all students.
In view of this, a new Academic Calendar was promptly announced to have started from October 5th, running till November 8th, 2026, to be the window for on-line registration via STS/DiGradsys portals, while October 16th was set for random and live allocation bed spaces. On October 19th, 2026, all students are expected to report to their various allocated halls and residences, while Frashers' Orientation will be held for new students between 21st and 23rd of October. Lectures will commence fully for all students on Monday the 26th of October, 2026. Matriculation will hold for new students on the 31st of October. The students will proceed on Christmas break on the 24th of December, 2026.
The news of reopening the University was received by both students and parents with mixed feelings: students being enthused to return to classrooms after about 10 weeks of academic uncertainty. Thus, a feeling of jubilation and triumph is palpable among both the old and new students. And for the parents, the reality of rebudgeting has finally caught up, as the announcement has come to stay with all clarity that their wards are returning to the classrooms.
