Super Eagles loss to Guinea-Bissau got fans vex
Super Eagles’ 3-0 Loss to Guinea-Bissau Gets Fans Vex
Nigerians were left frustrated after the Super Eagles suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau, just days after starting their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar.
The result in Bissau quickly turned the excitement from the Madagascar victory into disappointment, with fans questioning the team’s performance, mentality and tactical decisions.
What went wrong?
Nigeria struggled to match Guinea-Bissau’s intensity from the beginning. The hosts looked more aggressive and determined, while the Super Eagles found it difficult to create clear chances or impose their style on the game.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring before Mama Baldé doubled Guinea-Bissau’s advantage. Álvaro Djaló then added a third goal in stoppage time to complete a painful night for Nigeria.
Coach Eric Chelle admitted afterwards that Guinea-Bissau showed more aggression and personality. He also mentioned the poor pitch and difficult weather conditions, although he stressed that these were not excuses for the defeat.
Fans were not having it
The reaction from Nigerian fans was understandably angry. Many described the performance as embarrassing and questioned how a team that had just beaten Madagascar could look so poor a few days later.
Some supporters blamed the players, while others questioned Chelle’s tactics and selections. The poor playing surface also became part of the conversation, but not everyone accepted that explanation.
Brila Media executive chairman Larry Izamoje criticised the attempt to focus on the pitch, arguing that the Super Eagles and their coaches needed to accept responsibility for what happened on the field.
Ex-players also joined the conversation
Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba questioned Chelle’s selections and the mentality shown by the players during the defeat.
Former Nigeria international Dimeji Lawal was even more critical. Speaking on BRILA Media, he argued that the squad contains too many overhyped players and questioned whether some foreign-born players can cope with the physical demands of African football.
His comments added another layer to the debate about whether Nigeria’s current squad has the right mentality and experience for difficult African away matches.
What happens next?
Despite the defeat, Nigeria’s AFCON qualification hopes are not over. The Super Eagles have three points from two matches and are currently second in Group L, behind Guinea-Bissau on six points.
Chelle has already made it clear that the upcoming matches against Tanzania will be extremely important. Nigeria will need to collect maximum points and then take advantage of the later home fixture against Guinea-Bissau.
For now, the message from the camp is simple: learn from the embarrassment, improve quickly and respond on the pitch.
The 3-0 defeat was certainly a painful reality check, but the Super Eagles still have time to turn the situation around. The big question is whether the players can show the hunger, discipline and consistency Nigerian fans expect from them.
