Sundowns Edge Golden Arrows to Book Carling Knockout Semi-Final Spot

# Sundowns Edge Past Golden Arrows to Secure Carling Cup Semi-Final Place

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals after securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night.

The decisive moment came in the 69th minute when Iqraam Rayners found the back of the net, giving the Brazilians the breakthrough they needed to overcome a determined Arrows side.

Despite controlling much of the contest, Sundowns found it difficult to break down their opponents, who showed considerable determination and defensive discipline throughout the encounter.

Golden Arrows, playing under new coach Mandla Ncikazi, made life uncomfortable for Sundowns. Ncikazi recently left Orlando Pirates, where he served as assistant to Abdeslam Ouaddou, and was looking to make a positive impression with his new team.

However, Sundowns eventually found a way through, with Rayners' late strike proving enough to settle the contest and send the Tshwane-based club into the last four.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso made several changes to his starting line-up, choosing to rest some of his regular first-team players with an important CAF Super Cup encounter approaching.

The Portuguese tactician handed opportunities to several fringe players who have played important supporting roles during the club's demanding schedule. Among those given opportunities were goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, Malibongwe Khoza, Mothobi Mvala, Antonio van Wyk, Bathusi Aubaas, Sphelele Mkhulise and Arthur Sales.

The rotated side initially struggled to find a breakthrough against a well-organised Arrows defence. Nevertheless, the players maintained their composure until Rayners delivered the crucial goal.

The victory represents another positive step for Sundowns as they continue competing on multiple fronts this season. Their qualification also gives Cardoso an opportunity to pursue another domestic trophy while managing the demands of continental football.

Attention will now turn to the remaining quarter-final fixtures and the semi-final draw, which will determine Sundowns' next opponents.

Before then, the Brazilians must prepare for Sunday's CAF Super Cup showdown against USM Alger at Loftus Versfeld, with another major trophy within reach.
