Scholarship Guide: How To Check Scholarship Deadline On Official Scholarship Page And Other Study Abroad Tips
Scholarship guide: how to confirm an open deadline
Every year, thousands of Nigerian students miss life-changing scholarships not because they are not qualified, but because they trust a reposted link on Facebook, Telegram or WhatsApp. Someone posts "Chevening deadline extended to next week!" and you relax. Meanwhile, the official page closed yesterday. That is how money and opportunities are lost. This guide will teach you how to confirm if a scholarship is still open using only the official university or scholarship page.
Where the real deadline usually appears
The real deadline lives in only one place: the official scholarship website. It never lives in a screenshot, a flyer, or a broadcast message.
For this guide, I checked two official sources today, October 19, 2026, starting from the links you must always start from: https://www.mygov.scot/student-funding/ and https://www.chevening.org/scholarships/
1. Chevening Scholarships: When you open https://www.chevening.org/scholarships/ and click Apply, you land on the official application portal at https://www.chevening.org/apply/. The deadline is listed at the very top of the page in a blue banner, not hidden in a PDF. It says: Applications for 2027/28 are open from August 4, 2026 at 12:00 BST to October 6, 2026 at 12:00 BST (11:00 UTC) which is 12 noon Nigerian time. The same date is repeated on the UK Government website http://gov.uk and on every UK university partner page like Durham, York, and Edinburgh. That is the only date that counts. After that time, the portal locks automatically.
2. Scottish Government Student Funding (SAAS): When you open https://www.mygov.scot/student-funding/, scroll to "How to apply" and you will see SAAS (Student Awards Agency Scotland) rules. The official page states: For academic year 2026 to 2027, you must apply for student funding by March 31, 2027. However, to guarantee your money is in place for the start of your course, SAAS strongly advises you to apply by the priority deadline of June 30, 2026. You can even apply before you have a confirmed university offer.
What to look for on any official page: Look for a dedicated heading like Key Dates, Timeline, Important Dates, How to Apply, or Application Window. A real official page will always show the academic year clearly, for example 2027/28, and will include the exact time and time zone like 11:00 UTC or 12:00 BST. If you cannot find a date with a year, the scholarship is probably not open or you are on a fake site.
Why readers must check the official page date
This is the most important part of this guide. Google does not show the newest information first, it shows the most popular page first. A blog post written in 2024 about Chevening can still rank on page one of Google in 2026, but the deadline inside is completely expired. Many content farms copy old posts and just change the headline to 2026.
That is why you must check the official page date and state when you checked.
Best practice for every LDCP guide or scholarship post you write: Always write this sentence in your article: "Checked on [today's date] on official scholarship page: Deadline is [exact date + time + time zone]."
For example, for this article: Checked on October 19, 2026 on https://www.chevening.org/scholarships/ — Official deadline is October 6, 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Checked on October 19, 2026 on https://www.mygov.scot/student-funding/ — Official SAAS deadline is March 31, 2027, with priority by June 30, 2026.
Checking the official page date protects you in three ways. First, you avoid fake extensions. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) that runs Chevening clearly states no late submissions will be accepted, even if your internet failed. Second, you avoid applying to a closed program and wasting weeks on essays. Third, you prove to your readers that you did real research, which builds trust and helps your LDCP article get approved.
Always double-check the URL. The real Chevening site is https://www.chevening.org. The real Scottish funding site is https://www.mygov.scot. If the link is http://bit.ly/CheveningApply, http://mygov-scot.com, http://chevening-apply.netlify.app, or http://forms.gle, close it. Those are reposts.
Red flags in reposted scholarship posts
If you want to confirm a scholarship, treat it like fake sports news — check the official club. Here are five red flags that show a scholarship post is reposted, outdated, or a scam:
1. No year in the headline. A real post says "Chevening 2027/28 Now Open." A fake post says "Chevening Scholarship Now Open — Apply Now!" Without a year, you cannot know which cycle it is.
2. Screenshot only, no link to official page. Never rely on screenshots alone. Screenshots can be edited in 30 seconds on Canva. A real poster will always include the direct link to the official scholarship page. If someone only shares a flyer image, ask them for the official link and open it yourself.
3. "DM me for link" or "Pay to get the form." All major scholarships listed on http://mygov.scot and http://chevening.org are completely free to apply. If anyone asks you to pay N5,000 to "unlock" the application form or to get past questions, it is a scam. The official pages never charge.
4. Deadline is always "next week" or "extended indefinitely." Content farms keep changing the deadline to "Apply before next Friday" to get clicks. The official page never says "extended indefinitely." It gives a precise time like 11:00 UTC on October 6, 2026.
5. No eligibility or funding details. The official page lists real criteria. For Chevening, you need at least 2,800 hours of work experience, an undergraduate degree, and you must return to your country for two years. For SAAS, you must be ordinarily resident in Scotland. A repost that only says "All students can apply, 100% funded" is hiding the real criteria to get you to click.
Tip: Never rely on screenshots alone and how to build a safe habit
To never miss a deadline again, build this 2-minute habit every time you see a scholarship on Facebook, LDCP, or WhatsApp: First, open the official university or scholarship page in a new tab, starting from https://www.chevening.org/scholarships/ and https://www.mygov.scot/student-funding/. Second, use Google with site: restriction, for example type site:chevening.org deadline 2027. Third, confirm the date, bookmark the official page, and set a phone reminder one week before the deadline, not on deadline day. On deadline day, portals crash due to traffic.
And remember, always confirm from two official sources. For UK scholarships, check both the scholarship site and the UK government site http://gov.uk. Both confirmed the same October 6, 2026 deadline for Chevening 2027/28.
If you do this, you will never lose a scholarship because of a fake repost again.
