PENALTY NIGHTMARE FOR CHELSEA!

Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after overcoming Chelsea 6–5 on penalties following a tense 1–1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

It was a night of missed opportunities, goalkeeping heroics and serious penalty pressure, with both sides giving their supporters plenty to worry about before the contest was finally settled from the spot.

For Chelsea, the defeat was particularly painful. They had taken the lead, matched Liverpool for much of the contest and remained in the tie until the final stages of a lengthy shootout. However, missed penalties from Emmanuel Emegha and Wesley Fofana ultimately ended their hopes of progressing.

Liverpool, meanwhile, showed enough composure to survive the difficult moments and secure a place among the competition's last eight.

##Chelsea strike first through Morgan Rogers

The match began as a closely contested encounter, with neither side able to establish complete control during the opening stages.

Chelsea gradually found their rhythm and began creating opportunities, putting pressure on Liverpool's defence. Their breakthrough eventually arrived in the 40th minute after Moises Caicedo was brought down inside the penalty area by Ryan Gravenberch.

The referee pointed to the spot, giving Chelsea a valuable opportunity to take the lead.

Morgan Rogers stepped forward and showed little hesitation. He calmly sent the ball beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, putting the visitors ahead and giving Chelsea supporters reason to believe they could leave Anfield with a quarter-final ticket.

At that point, Chelsea appeared to have gained an important advantage. However, their lead lasted only a few minutes.

##Gakpo responds almost immediately

Liverpool did not allow Chelsea to enjoy their advantage for long.

The home side were awarded a penalty of their own just three minutes after Rogers had scored. The opportunity came following a handball by Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana during a Liverpool corner.

Cody Gakpo took responsibility for the kick and made no mistake, sending his effort into the bottom-left corner to bring Liverpool level at 1–1.

The quick response changed the atmosphere at Anfield. What had looked like a promising moment for Chelsea suddenly became another difficult test, with Liverpool back in the contest and the home supporters fully involved.

Both penalties came within a short period, making the closing moments of the first half particularly eventful. Despite the sudden burst of goals, neither team managed to find another breakthrough before the interval.

##A tense second half produces no winner

The second half continued in much the same competitive spirit, with both teams searching for the goal that could send them through without the need for penalties.

Chelsea had opportunities to regain the lead. Rogers tested Mamardashvili early after the restart, but the Liverpool goalkeeper reacted well to keep the effort out.

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders also had plenty to do. He produced important saves to deny Liverpool, including efforts from Ronald Araujo and Bradley Barcola, helping his team remain level.

As the match progressed, Liverpool increased their attacking pressure. Florian Wirtz and Barcola were introduced as substitutes, bringing additional energy and attacking options to the home side.

Chelsea also made changes, with Emmanuel Emegha coming on to make his debut for the club. The forward would later become one of the central figures in the penalty shootout.

One of Chelsea's best opportunities came when Marco Palestra found space and attempted to guide the ball towards goal. Mamardashvili produced an important save to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.

Liverpool also came close to scoring, but Chelsea's defenders made crucial interventions to keep the score level.

Despite the attacking efforts, neither side could find the decisive goal. The match finished 1–1 after 90 minutes, meaning the contest would be decided by a penalty shootout.

##The penalty shootout: where Chelsea's nightmare began

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, the pressure shifted from open play to the penalty spot.

Both teams initially converted their attempts, keeping the shootout closely balanced. Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister and Alexander Isak scored, while Chelsea's Pedro Neto and Rogers responded.

Gakpo also converted for Liverpool, and Chelsea continued to keep pace through Roméo Lavia. Further successful efforts from Florian Wirtz and Jordan Henderson maintained the tension.

However, the shootout soon became unpredictable.

Chelsea's Valentín Barco struck the inside of the post and missed his opportunity. Liverpool then had a chance to finish the contest when Kostas Tsimikas stepped up, but his effort flew over the crossbar.

The missed kicks gave Chelsea another opportunity to stay alive. Henderson converted his penalty, and the shootout moved into sudden death.

Bradley Barcola and Levi Colwill both scored, keeping the teams level. Liverpool goalkeeper Mike Penders then made an important save to deny Ryan Gravenberch, while the drama continued as both sides struggled to find a decisive advantage.

The defining moment arrived when Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha stepped forward.

Emegha attempted to convert his penalty, but Mamardashvili read the effort and made a crucial save. The Liverpool goalkeeper's intervention put the home side in a strong position and left Chelsea under enormous pressure.

Joe Gomez then stepped up for Liverpool and confidently struck his penalty into the top corner, giving the Reds a 6–5 advantage.

Chelsea's hopes rested on Wesley Fofana. Unfortunately for the defender, his effort sailed over the crossbar, confirming Liverpool's victory and sending the Anfield crowd into celebration.

##Mamardashvili and Gomez deliver when it matters

Although Liverpool's victory was a team effort, two players played particularly important roles in the closing stages.

Mamardashvili's save against Emegha proved decisive. Penalty shootouts often depend on small moments, and the goalkeeper's ability to remain composed and read the direction of the kick gave Liverpool the opportunity to take control.

Gomez also deserves recognition. His successful penalty came at a critical stage, when Liverpool needed a player capable of handling the pressure. He delivered with confidence, placing Chelsea in a position where Fofana had to score to keep the contest alive.

For Chelsea, the disappointment will be difficult to ignore. Penders had made several important saves during the match and even denied Gravenberch during the shootout. However, those efforts were not enough to prevent elimination.

Fofana's missed penalty will attract attention, but Chelsea's defeat was not caused by one moment alone. The team had opportunities during the match to secure victory before penalties became necessary.

##What the result means for both clubs

Liverpool's win sends them into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and keeps their hopes of lifting the trophy alive. Beating a major opponent in such dramatic circumstances can also provide a confidence boost as the season continues.

The result also continues Liverpool's strong record in penalty shootouts against Chelsea. The two clubs have previously been involved in several memorable cup encounters, including the dramatic 2022 FA Cup final, which Liverpool also won on penalties.

For Chelsea, attention now turns to their next fixtures and the need to recover quickly from the disappointment. Their performance showed that they could compete with Liverpool at Anfield, but the missed opportunities and final penalty errors proved costly.

The defeat also provides a reminder of how unforgiving knockout football can be. A team can compete well for 90 minutes, create chances and even perform strongly in a shootout, yet still leave the competition because of a few decisive moments.

For Liverpool, the celebrations can begin. For Chelsea, it is a night they will want to put behind them.

Final score: Liverpool 1–1 Chelsea (Liverpool win 6–5 on penalties).

Liverpool advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
