Olunga and Okumu lead Kenya squad chatter

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has named a 36-man provisional squad ahead of Kenya's upcoming double-header against South Africa, with experienced internationals Michael Olunga and Joseph Okumu among the standout selections.

The announcement has generated excitement among Kenyan football fans, who will be eager to see how the national team performs against Bafana Bafana in the two November encounters.

The provisional squad brings together a mix of experienced players and promising young talents, with several footballers earning an opportunity to impress the coach before the final team is announced.

##Who Made the Provisional Squad?

McCarthy's 36-man selection consists of five goalkeepers, 13 defenders, seven midfielders and 11 forwards.

The goalkeepers named are Byrne Omondi, Faruk Shikhalo, Ian Otieno, Brian Bwire and Caleb Kramer.

The defensive department includes Joseph Okumu, Vincent Harper, Stanley Wilson, Eric Ouma, Abud Omar, Amos Wanjala, Frank Odhiambo, Deon Woodman, Daniel Anyembe, Sylvester Owino, Michael Kibagwe, Rooney Onyango and Hannif Wesonga.

In midfield, the selected players are Manzur Okwaro, Henry Ochieng, Chris Erambo, Marvin Nabwire, Zak Vyner, Alwyn Tera and Alpha Onyango.

Leading the attacking options is captain Michael Olunga. He is joined by Ryan Ogam, Aldrine Kibet, Will Lenkupae, Kevin Wangaya, Mohammed Bajaber, Ben Stanley, Job Ochieng, Adam Wilson, Micah Obiero and Lawrence Okoth.

Olunga and Okumu Bring Valuable Experience

Two names that will particularly excite supporters are Michael Olunga and Joseph Okumu.

Olunga remains one of Kenya's most important attacking players. His experience, leadership and ability to find the back of the net make him a valuable option for McCarthy as the team prepares for the South African challenge.

His inclusion is also encouraging news for fans, especially after he missed the previous international window while recovering from an injury.

Okumu's selection is equally significant. The Stade de Reims defender has returned to contention following a lengthy injury absence. His experience playing in European football could prove important as Kenya looks to strengthen its defence against a strong South African side.

There is also plenty of interest in younger players such as Aldrine Kibet and Job Ochieng. Both will have an opportunity to impress the coaching staff and show that they can contribute at international level.

##What to Expect Before the Final Selection

Although the provisional squad has been announced, not every player will make the final team.

McCarthy will have to assess the players' fitness, current form and ability to fit into his tactical plans before making his final decisions.

For supporters, one of the biggest talking points will be whether returning players Olunga and Okumu are fully ready for the challenge. There will also be interest in seeing which of the younger players can earn a place in the final squad.

Kenya will travel to South Africa on November 13, 2026, for the first meeting before welcoming Bafana Bafana to Nyayo National Stadium on November 17. The return fixture is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 pm East African Time.

##A Valuable Test Ahead of AFCON 2027

Kenya has already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

However, matches against strong opponents such as South Africa remain important as the team continues preparing for the continental tournament.

The two encounters will give McCarthy an opportunity to assess his players, improve team understanding and build a stronger squad ahead of AFCON 2027.

For Harambee Stars supporters, the hope is that the team can put in convincing performances and build momentum.

All eyes will now be on McCarthy's final squad announcement and whether Olunga, Okumu and the emerging talents can help Kenya achieve positive results against Bafana Bafana.
