INEC says the claim is false. There is no final phase of online voter registration happening now.
If you saw a post saying INEC has opened a new online voter registration from September 28 to October 27, 2026, with a link to register, transfer polling unit, or replace your PVC, do not click it. It is fake.
What the fake claim says
The fraudulent website, shared through a shortened link tinyurl.com/inecnigeria-cv, claims INEC announced a fresh nationwide online voter registration exercise from September 28 to October 27, 2026.
The site offers services like:
- Fresh voter registration
- Voter information update
- Polling unit transfer
- Replacement of lost or damaged PVCs
According to INEC's public notice issued Saturday, October 3, 2026, on its official X page @inecnigeria, this website has no affiliation whatsoever with INEC.
INEC clarified that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise closed on July 26, 2026. The commission posted that any information suggesting a new nationwide online registration is ongoing through that website is false. The official voter portal now shows CVR has ended.
INEC warned that visiting the site and entering your name, phone number, NIN or address could expose you to data harvesting, identity theft and fraud.
This is different from the other INEC issue trending now about AI-generated photos in the preliminary register. That register was displayed physically Oct 9-15 and online at display.inecnigeria.org on Oct 26 for claims and objections. The fake link is NOT that official display portal.
How people can spot warning signs
Before you trust any voter link, check these 5 signs:
1. The link is not http://inecnigeria.org: Real INEC links end with inecnigeria.org or inecnews.com. Fake ones use tinyurl, http://bit.ly, google forms, or strange spelling like http://inec-nigeria-cvr.com.
2. It asks for urgent personal data: INEC will never ask you to pay money or submit your NIN, BVN or bank details to register. If the page asks for that, close it.
3. No post on INEC official pages: Check @inecnigeria on X, Facebook INEC Nigeria, or website http://inecnigeria.org. If INEC truly opens registration, they post it everywhere. INEC's contact centre is 0700-2255-4632, shortcode 4632, email iccc@inec.gov.ng. Call to confirm.
4. Bad English and no logo: Fake pages have blurry INEC logos, caps lock "REGISTER NOW!!!", and wrong dates. INEC notices are dated, signed, and formal.
5. Africa Check and fact-checkers flag it: Africa Check via allAfrica has flagged similar fake INEC portals. Search the headline + "Africa Check" or "Dubawa" before sharing.
Why misinformation spreads fast before major civic events
With the 2027 general elections coming January 16, 2027, and final register due December 15, 2026, people are anxious to register. Scammers know this.
Misinformation spreads because:
- People want to help friends get PVCs and forward without checking
- WhatsApp and Facebook groups amplify any "INEC news"
- Old registration screenshots are recycled as new
- Many Nigerians don't know the official portal and trust any link with INEC name
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said at the recent summit on electoral integrity that fake registration portals and fake operational directives are now a major threat. INEC has even created an AI unit and is working with TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp and X to pull down fake links.
Bottom line: If you already registered before July 26, use display.inecnigeria.org only to check your details. If you did not register, you will have to wait for INEC's next announcement. Do not use any new link until INEC posts it on its verified channels.
