New Faces Bring Fresh Hope to Kenya’s Rugby Sevens
Kenya’s rugby sevens team has fresh reasons for optimism, with emerging players stepping into the spotlight and giving fans exciting new names to follow. Their impressive performances at the 2026 Safari Sevens have strengthened hopes that Kenya can build a competitive squad for upcoming international challenges.
Several young talents, according to the Daily Nation, caught the attention of coach Kevin Wambua during the tournament at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.Among the standout newcomers are Glacious “Love Donor” Owino of Menengai Oilers and Rayvone “Olindi” Ambale of Kabras Sugar, who made their Shujaa debuts. Both play at half-back, a position that requires quick decisions, accurate passing and the ability to create scoring opportunities.
Other players include Dennis Ndayala of Mwamba, who impressed for the Kenya Morans, and Kabras Sugar’s Michael Lukusi and Mathias Osimbo. Menengai Oilers’ Lucky Onyango and Daystar University’s Arnold Ogonda also attracted attention during the competition.
Owino impressed with his attacking ability and defensive work, while Ambale showed promise as a creative playmaker. Ndayala, just 19, demonstrated composure and control at fly-half, offering a glimpse of his potential.
The changes matter because Kenya needs a strong pool of players capable of competing consistently at international level. Introducing younger talent creates competition for places, gives coaches more tactical options and helps prepare the team for future tournaments.
Shujaa are also working towards regaining their place in World Rugby’s Sevens Division I. A blend of experienced players and ambitious newcomers could help the team develop the speed, creativity and consistency required to achieve that goal.
The Safari Sevens provided an important opportunity to assess emerging talent. Shujaa defeated the Morans 24-5 in the final to claim their 13th Safari Sevens title, with several fresh faces making valuable contributions.
For fans, the next major talking point will be the squad selected for the upcoming international series. Supporters will be watching to see whether Owino, Ambale and other promising performers earn regular places, and whether they can reproduce their domestic form against stronger international opposition.
Kenya’s new generation has made an encouraging start. The challenge now is to turn that promise into consistent performances and renewed success on the world stage.
