South Africa vs Kenya: Bafana Host Harambee Stars In Key AFCON 2027 Qualifier

Fixture: South Africa vs Kenya
Competition: AFCON 2027 Qualifiers - Group D, Matchday 3
Date: Wednesday, November 11, 2026
Venue: South Africa

Goal's fixtures page still lists Nov 11, but CAF's updated schedule now lists the game for Friday, Nov 13 at 18:00 SAST, with the return leg in Nairobi on Tuesday, Nov 17.

Why both fan bases care

This is more than a qualifier. It's a rivalry with a storyline both sides know well.

Kenya are coached by Benni McCarthy, the former Bafana Bafana striker, who will face his home country for the first time since taking charge of Harambee Stars.

On the other side is South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane, McCarthy's former mentor. McCarthy has already said his loyalty is firmly with Kenya for these two games.

For South African fans, it's about pride and proving Bafana are still the team to beat in the group. For Kenyan fans, it's about testing themselves against a top side at home before they host AFCON 2027 next summer alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

What a result could mean in the group

The group table makes this double-header huge.

South Africa lead Group D with 6 points from 2 games after a 5-0 win over Eritrea. Kenya are on 1 point, with Guinea on 3 and Eritrea on 1.

But there's a twist: Kenya have already qualified for AFCON 2027 as co-hosts. That means only the highest-placed other team in the group goes through.

  • If South Africa win: They move to 9 points and take a big step toward sealing that one qualification spot, leaving Guinea and Eritrea to chase them.
  • If Kenya win: They won't need the points to qualify, but they will dent South Africa's momentum, open the door for Guinea, and give their fans massive bragging rights heading into the return leg in Nairobi.
  • If it's a draw: South Africa stay in control, but the group stays alive for the second leg just four days later.

In short: South Africa are playing for qualification. Kenya are playing for pride, momentum, and a statement win before a home AFCON.
