Mavo’s Old Tweets and Apology Are Trending Again
Mavo is back in the spotlight after some of his old social media posts criticising Nigerian entertainers resurfaced online. The posts have sparked fresh conversations about how celebrities behave online, whether people can genuinely outgrow their past opinions and whether an apology should be enough to move on.
Why did the old tweets resurface?
The old posts began circulating again on social media, bringing attention back to comments Mavo made before he became more established in the music industry.
Some of the posts were directed at well-known Nigerian entertainers, including Davido, Ayra Starr and Erica Nlewedim. The resurfaced comments quickly became part of the latest Nigerian music gist, with social media users debating what Mavo had said in the past compared with how he behaves now.
The renewed attention also came as Mavo's music career continued to grow. That made some people more interested in looking back at his old opinions and comparing them with the person he has become today.
What did Mavo say?
Mavo responded to the conversation on X with an apology and an explanation of how his attitude had changed.
In his post, he wrote: “I was a bad entertainment critic when I started uni until I realized superstars don't really care about Twitter.”
He explained that he eventually stopped criticising other entertainers and focused on his own music career instead.
Mavo also admitted that some of his past criticism had hurt people. He said: “My criticism sadly unfortunately & unintentionally hurt quite a number of people & I'm honestly sorry.”
He added that he had met many of the people he previously criticised and discovered that they were different from the way he had judged them online.
Mavo described his previous views as “misjudgment” and ended his apology with “Let love lead.” These are Mavo's own words from his post, rather than a description of his statement.
Not everyone had the same reaction
The Mavo apology has received mixed reactions online.
Some people accepted his explanation and saw it as an example of someone acknowledging that they were wrong and changing with time. Others were less convinced and questioned whether he was only apologising because the old tweets had started trending again.
Some social media users also pointed out that people can have very different attitudes when they are younger, especially before becoming public figures themselves. Others argued that being younger does not automatically excuse hurtful comments.
The debate has therefore gone beyond Mavo himself. It has become another conversation about old tweets, public accountability and whether people should continue to be judged by things they said years ago.
For now, Mavo appears to be asking people to focus on the person he has become rather than the harsh critic he says he once was. But as the old tweets resurfaced, social media users are still deciding whether his apology deserves a second chance.
