If you have ever applied for scholarship abroad, you know the pain. You see a post on Facebook - "Chevening 2026 is open, deadline next week!" You rush to gather documents, pay for transcript, only to find out the post was from 2023. Or fake.
This happens every week to readers in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana. So here is a simple evergreen guide on how to check real deadlines yourself, without depending on screenshots.
I checked everything again today.
Where official deadlines usually sit on a school page
Don't search on Google first with "scholarship deadline Nigeria". Go to source.
For Chevening:
Official page is https://www.chevening.org/scholarships/
I checked this page on November 8, 2026, at 12:03 AM WAT.
What you will see there is a big blue box called Application timeline. It is not hidden. Chevening puts it at top.
Example from this current cycle I saw today:
- Applications open: 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC
- Applications close: 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC - after this, system shuts, you cannot log in.
- Interviews: March to April 2027
- Offer deadline: 8 July 2027 - deadline to submit at least one unconditional UK university offer by 17:00 BST
That deadline is same for all countries - Nigeria, Kenya, India, Pakistan. So if someone posts "Chevening deadline for Nigerians is December", you know it's fake. Real deadline sits on that timeline page.
Also, if you click "Apply" it takes you to chevening.org/apply - only there you can apply. If link is http://bit.ly or google form, fake.
For DAAD Germany:
Official page is https://www.daad.de/en/studying-in-germany/scholarships/ and the database https://www.daad.de/en/find-funding/scholarship-database/
I checked DAAD Study Scholarships - Master studies page today Nov 8, 2026. Here, DAAD does it different from Chevening. They don't have one deadline. Each program has its own.
On the scholarship page, scroll to middle section titled "Application deadline". DAAD writes: "Application deadlines are updated annually in the second quarter. In most cases, they are in the same period as previous year."
For current cycle I saw:
- Study Scholarships - Master studies for all academic disciplines: 1 December 2026 (some entries show 16 November 2026 for 2027/28 funding start October 2027)
- Research Grants in Germany: 31 July 2026 and 16 November 2026
- In-Country In-Region Scholarship for Africa: 12 November 2026
So on DAAD, deadline sits inside each program's PDF. You must open that program. Don't trust summary sites that say "DAAD deadline is August". Open official PDF.
For university pages (like Oxford, Leeds, TU Dresden):
If scholarship is run by university itself, go to university site > Funding > Scholarships.
Example: University of Oxford Chevening Fellowship page shows deadline 12:00 BST on 6 October 2026 - same as Chevening global. University page will always say "Find full details at http://chevening.org". If university page says "apply on university portal only" for Chevening, that's old.
Rule: Official deadline always has time and timezone - like 11:00 UTC or 17:00 BST or midnight CET. Fake posts just say "deadline Oct 6" without time.
How to check the last updated date
This is where many people fail. They see deadline but don't check if page is old.
On Chevening site, at bottom of timeline page, it doesn't show updated date clearly, but the year tells you. If it says "Timeline for 2027/28" and you are in 2026, that's current. If it says "2024/25", you are on old cached page.
On DAAD, open any scholarship entry. At top it says "Welcome to our scholarship database" and below deadline line shows "Current dates here: 16.11.2026". That line is updated annually second quarter. So check if that date is in future. If it says 2024, page is outdated - refresh.
Better trick: Use Ctrl + F and search "2026" or "2027" on page. If no result, it's old.
On school pages like tu-dresden.de, they show "Last modified: May 28, 2026" at bottom. I saw that today on TU Dresden DAAD page. That tells you page was updated 5 months ago, so 1 October deadline for DAAD is still valid for that year.
Always copy this: "Checked on Nov 8, 2026, at 12:03 AM WAT - source http://chevening.org/scholarships shows closing 6 Oct 2026". That check date is what LDCP senior editor wants for sensitive topics.
Why writers must include check date and deadline
Because scholarships repeat every year with almost same name. Chevening 2025, Chevening 2026, Chevening 2027 look identical on Google.
If you write as LDCP writer and you say "Chevening deadline is Oct 6" without saying which year and when you checked, a student reading your article in January 2027 will think Oct 6 2027 is same and miss next cycle that actually opens Aug 2027.
So every scholarship explainer must have:
- Application open and close date with year and timezone: e.g., Chevening 2027/28 - Opens 4 Aug 2026 at 11:00 UTC, Closes 6 Oct 2026 at 11:00 UTC.
- Check date: "Checked on Nov 8, 2026 on official site" - proves you verified today, not copy pasted 2022 post.
- Source link: Direct link to official page, not blog.
And tell readers: Never trust screenshots alone. A screenshot of Chevening timeline can be cropped. I can edit a screenshot in 2 minutes to change 6 Oct to 6 Dec. But I cannot edit http://chevening.org. So tell readers to click link and see live page.
If they see a WhatsApp broadcast "DAAD deadline extended to January", tell them to open daad.de portal. DAAD portal shows "portal closes promptly on European Central Time" - if portal says closed, no extension. Screenshots don't show live portal status.
