Ghana's Football Coach Drama
Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Queiroz mutually agree to terminate contract on Oct 1st, barely a month after they re-hired him on September 2nd.
The trigger was two bad losses during AFCON 2027 qualifiers: 2-0 away to Ivory Coast, and 4-2 home loss to Gambia and Ghana 2-0 taking the lead in Accra Sports Stadium. Ernest Nuamah and Afena-Gyan put Ghana 2-0 up, Gambia scored 4 straight.
Queiroz speech: "This was not an easy decision, but... the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end"_
The overall record is 7 games: 1 win, 2 draws, 4 losses - 5 goals score, 10 concede.
Why the short stay is surprising:
1. He just came from World Cup heroics. He was first hired in April on 4-month contract to replace Otto Addo after heavy defeats to Austria and Germany. He carried Ghana in Round of 32 for first time since 2010 - beat Panama, draw England, then lose 1-0 to Colombia.
- Second spell last less than one window. That first contract finished after the World Cup, GFA re-appointed him in September 2 to lead AFCON qualifiers. Second spell last less than a month - two games, two losses, done.
- He will be the first Black Stars coach to concede 4 goals in an AFCON qualifier, and Ghana now in bottom of Group C with 0 points.
Whats fans may watch next:
New coach search: GFA has not announced replacement yet, but they will need it soon before back-to-back qualifiers vs Somalia in November.
AFCON qualification danger: Only top 2 in the group have qualified. Ghana is risking missing second AFCON in a row.
Player pressure: Queiroz beg fans for his farewell: _"Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them."_ these are signs that dressing room tension is high and fans are angry with players.
Fans are already shouting names like local coaches and ex-players in X, but GFA will likely look for another experienced foreign coach again.
