Flamingos go for history in World Cup final

The Nigeria U-17 female national team, known as the Flamingos, are one game away from creating some history at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final in Morocco, where they will play Japan.

For the young Nigerian stars it presents the opportunity to win their first ever title in the competition and become the first African nation to ever win the U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria secured their spot in the final with a 3-1 victory in their semi final against Brazil. After a scoreless first half, the Flamingos came out strong after the break and proved why they deserve to be in the final.

Queen Joseph scored the opener in the 56th minute before Awawu Bashiru added to the Nigeria tally with two goals in the 71st and 80th minutes. Brazil were able to pull one back in the dying moments of the game with Greise Kelly scoring in the 89th minute.

This victory means a lot to the team. They began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, raising doubts over their chances to advance in the competition. However, they did not let this impact their confidence. They bounced back from the loss.

They went onto beat Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea in the group stages. In the Round of 16 they knocked Mexico out of the competition and then had a tight 1-0 win over Venezuela in the quarter finals.

This ultimately led them to make it to the final.

Nigeria have been here before. In 2022, they came third in the competition after beating Germany in the third place match. This is the best result they have had in the tournament’s history.

However, the Japanese team will not make it easy for Nigeria. They displayed their fighting spirit by winning against North Korea on penalties after the semi final finished 1-1. They will be just as keen to win the trophy.

The Flamingos must stay focused and put in a good defensive display. They will also need to seize their chances. Their attacking display against Brazil has left many Nigerians hopeful.

It gives the players and coaches the opportunity to reward their hard work in the tournament. It also gives inspiration to young girls across Nigeria who want to become professional footballers.

Nigerians will be cheering them on.

The Flamingos have already done amazing by getting to the final. If they can beat Japan they will not only bring the trophy home to Nigeria but create a new chapter in the history of African women’s football.
