Fire Outbreak Destroys Lives in Nigeria: Six Dead, Many Injured as Petrol Tanker Explosion Ravages Benin City **Section:** Local News **Location:** Oluku, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria

A tragic petrol tanker explosion in Oluku, along the Benin-Lagos Highway in Edo State, has left families mourning, traders counting their losses, and survivors battling severe burns. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, has once again drawn attention to the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, the condition of Nigerian roads, and the urgent need to strengthen public safety awareness.

According to a report published by Vanguard On October 18, at least six people lost their lives while approximately 20 others sustained injuries following the explosion. The inferno also destroyed shops, vehicles, and market structures, leaving many traders and residents devastated.

What began as a road accident quickly turned into a disaster, demonstrating how a single incident can destroy lives, livelihoods, and properties within minutes.

How the Tragedy Happened

The incident reportedly began when a petrol tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, fell while attempting to turn into the Oluku bypass along the Benin-Lagos Highway. Reports indicated that the tanker encountered a bad section of the road, contributing to the accident.

Following the fall, petrol spilled from the tanker onto the road and into nearby drainage channels. The leaking fuel attracted residents and passers-by, some of whom rushed to collect it in gallons, buckets, and other containers.

For some people, the situation may have appeared to be an opportunity to obtain fuel without paying the prevailing market price. However, the decision to approach the fallen tanker exposed them to an extremely dangerous situation.

As people gathered around the vehicle, efforts were reportedly made to recover the remaining fuel. Unfortunately, the situation took a devastating turn when the petrol ignited, triggering a massive fire that spread rapidly through the surrounding area.

According to reports by Premium Times eyewitnesses described seeing a spark before the inferno erupted. Within moments, people around the scene were forced to flee for their lives as the flames engulfed nearby vehicles and structures.

Lives Lost and Survivors Left Injured

The human cost of the explosion has been devastating. Several people reportedly suffered serious burns, while others were feared dead in the immediate aftermath.

Although early reports gave different casualty figures as emergency operations continued, a subsequent report by Vanguard on October 18 stated that six people had died and approximately 20 others were injured.

The injured victims were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where medical teams worked to provide emergency care and stabilise those with severe burns.

Markets, Shops and Vehicles Destroyed

Beyond the loss of lives, the explosion caused extensive damage to property around Oluku Market and neighbouring areas.

According to reports, the fire spread to market structures, shops, and vehicles, consuming goods that traders had invested their money, time, and effort into acquiring.

For small business owners, such losses can be particularly difficult to recover from. Many traders depend on daily sales to feed their families, pay school fees, meet rent obligations, and support other household needs. When their goods are destroyed, they may lose not only their stock but also their only source of income.

The Vanguard report stated that about 2,000 traders were counting their losses following the destruction of two markets and several shops.

The incident has therefore created a wider economic problem for the affected community. Employees may lose their jobs, customers may lose access to essential goods, and families may struggle financially while traders attempt to rebuild their businesses.
