False political information ahead of 2027 General elections.

The spread of false political information on social media is becoming a growing concern,as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Materials such as Fabricated statements, manipulated photographs, misleading videos and old documents presented as recent developments are being used to misinform citizens and influence public opinion.

TheCable Fact Check in a report has drawn attention to misleading political narratives circulating online ahead of the elections. According to the report, the development highlights the need for Nigerians to exercise caution when consuming and sharing political information, particularly as political activities and public discussions intensify.

The use of social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram and X ,as means of political communication have allowed political parties, candidates, journalists and citizens to share information, express opinions and participate in discussions about governance.

However, these platforms are also being used to spread falsehoods capable of damaging reputations, increasing political tensions and misleading voters.

These means are sometimes used to portray a politician negatively, through circulation of fabricated quotations attributed to political leaders,in order to provoke public anger or create the impression that a public figure has expressed a controversial opinion.

The fabricated content may appear genuine to unsuspecting readers, when accompanied by photographs, logos or graphics resembling those of established media organisations.

Another challenge is manipulated photographs and videos ,as the images can be altered, taken out of context or combined with unrelated captions to suggest events that never happened. Similarly, recirculation of old letters, speeches and news reports without their original dates, may create the false impression that they relate to current political developments.

The danger of these materials lies partly in the speed at which they travel online,as the desire to be among the first to share breaking news can sometimes take precedence over the responsibility to establish the truth. Many users unfortunately forward messages without verification because they agree with the political position expressed, trust the person who shared them or believe that the information will help others. ,

False political information can have serious consequences on the nation's democratic process,as this may influence voters' decisions, deepen divisions among supporters of different political parties, affecting their decision on meaningful discussions about candidates' policies, records, competence and plans for national development.

The challenge is to ensure that the benefits of digital communication are not undermined by deliberate deception and careless sharing ,as the information should be properly investigated, confirmed and verified.
