Eastleigh Collapse Rescue Keeps Kenya on Edge as Death Toll Rises to Eight
The deadly collapse of an 18-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, has continued to keep residents and families across Kenya anxious as rescue teams work to account for people still missing beneath the rubble.
The building collapsed on October 23, 2026, along 9th Street in Eastleigh while it was still under construction. The incident triggered a major search and recovery operation involving several emergency agencies.
Death Toll Rises to Eight
On Thursday, November 5, rescuers recovered six additional bodies from the collapsed structure, bringing the confirmed death toll to eight.
According to reports by Citizen Digital and The Star, four of the recovered victims were women and two were men. The bodies were transferred to Nairobi City Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations and identification procedures are being carried out.
Four people have so far been rescued alive from the rubble. However, five others remain unaccounted for, leaving their families waiting anxiously for news.
Rescue Teams Continue Their Work
The multi-agency operation includes the Kenya Defence Forces, National Disaster Management Unit, National Disaster Operations Centre, Nairobi City County Government and Kenya Red Cross.
By Friday, November 6, the Interior Ministry reported that the recovery operation had reached 95 per cent completion. Teams were still clearing the remaining debris and trying to establish the whereabouts of everyone reported missing.
The authorities have appealed for patience as the teams continue their work. Families are also waiting for formal identification of recovered victims so they can receive accurate information about their loved ones.
Safety Questions Raise Public Concern
Beyond the immediate tragedy, the collapse has renewed public concern about construction standards and building safety in Nairobi.
Residents want to know whether buildings are properly inspected and whether developers follow the required safety regulations. The incident has also increased calls for stronger enforcement against anyone who puts lives at risk through unsafe construction practices.
Authorities have yet to provide a final account of the circumstances that caused the building to collapse. Investigations will be important in establishing what happened and whether any rules were violated.
Families Still Waiting for Answers
For families gathered around the site, every update brings both hope and fear. While four people survived and eight bodies have been recovered, the five people still unaccounted for remain at the centre of the ongoing search.
The tragedy has become a painful reminder of the importance of safe construction, proper inspections and accountability.
As recovery teams work towards completing their mission, many Kenyans are watching closely and hoping that the families affected will finally receive the answers they deserve.
