“Yourself.” That single word from billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has become one of the most talked-about moments from his recent Al Jazeera interview, drawing a hilarious reaction from Nigerian disc jockey and billionaire heiress DJ Cuppy.
The exchange began when an Al Jazeera journalist questioned why Dangote needed to take the Dangote Petroleum Refinery public when, as one of the world’s wealthiest businessmen, he could potentially finance the project himself.
Dangote’s answer quickly caught the attention of Nigerians online.
Explaining the thinking behind the Dangote refinery IPO, the businessman said the public offer was not simply about raising money. Instead, he presented it as an opportunity to broaden ownership and allow ordinary people to benefit from the refinery’s growth.
Dangote said he wanted people including his driver and cook, as well as the journalist, his family and other everyday investors, to have a chance to own a stake in the business. It was his pointed inclusion of “yourself” while addressing the interviewer that turned the otherwise serious financial discussion into a viral social media moment.
DJ Cuppy reacts to Dangote’s viral response
DJ Cuppy, whose real name is Florence Otedola, was among those amused by the exchange.
Reacting under an Instagram post featuring the interview clip, Cuppy picked out the same word that had caught the attention of many viewers, writing: “‘Yourself.’ Lord have mercy 😅.”
Her brief comment quickly attracted attention of its own. According to Legit.ng, it recorded more than 3,000 likes and over 80 replies at the time of its report. The reaction helped push the DJ Cuppy Dangote conversation beyond business circles and into Nigerian entertainment and pop-culture discussions.
Why Dangote’s refinery IPO is getting attention
Behind the humour is a significant financial story.
According to Nairametrics, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals IPO comprises 4.1 billion new ordinary shares at ₦525 each, amounting to about ₦2.15 trillion. The minimum subscription is 10 shares, meaning investors can participate from ₦5,250. The offer is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026, with an NGX listing expected in November.
Dangote has argued that the offer is designed to “democratise” wealth creation by allowing a much broader group of investors to own part of one of Africa’s biggest industrial projects. Nairametrics also reported that the offer is accessible through dozens of digital channels, with an ambition to reach millions of investors.
That combination helps explain the Nigeria social media buzz: a major multitrillion-naira IPO, a billionaire’s memorable response to a television interviewer and DJ Cuppy’s playful reaction have brought the usually technical subject of capital markets into everyday online conversation.
For many Nigerians reposting the clip, however, the finance lesson has been condensed into one unforgettable word: “Yourself.”
