David Miller just played the innings of his life, and it came on the most personal day possible.
The 37-year-old Proteas veteran smashed a career-best 142 off just 93 balls against Australia in the second ODI at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, on Sunday, September 28. The knock included 12 fours and 9 sixes and powered South Africa to 365/9 batting first, before bowling Australia out for 333 to win by 32 runs, according to https://www.iol.co.za.
Why it stood out is more than the numbers. This was South Africa cricket's annual Pink Day ODI, the game where the Proteas wear pink to raise money and awareness for breast cancer treatment at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. This year, every Proteas player replaced his own name on the back of his shirt with the name of a breast cancer survivor or fighter. Miller wore "Jenny" — the name of his mother, Jenny Miller, a breast cancer survivor who was in the stands with his father.
It was his eighth ODI hundred and his fourth against Australia, and now his highest score in ODIs, beating all previous bests. He shared a 156-run stand for the fourth wicket with captain Temba Bavuma, who also made 103.
But the personal story is what made fans emotional.
Miller said after the match, where he was named Player of the Match: "It was really emotional. I don't think my mom has stopped crying for the last 24 hours."
He added: "It's been a tough couple of years, and to celebrate the challenges they've been through on a day like this makes it really special for them. She said to me earlier, 'I don't have enough makeup today because it keeps falling off!'"
Miller, now the oldest player in the Proteas ODI squad, admitted the innings might be the most special of his career because of what his family has been through. For South African fans, seeing him look up to the stands after reaching his hundred and find his mother became an instant iconic moment.
Fan reaction was huge. On X and on IOL's comments, Proteas fans called it the ultimate tribute and one of the most emotional Pink Day innings ever. Many praised Miller's longevity — from struggling for 9 off 25 balls in Durban a few days earlier to smashing a record innings. Others noted the perfect timing, as competition for middle-order spots is fierce with younger players like Matthew Breetzke in form.
Australia's captain Mitchell Marsh also praised the knock after his team lost its sixth successive bilateral ODI series to South Africa.
For Miller, it was not just about South Africa cricket history. It was about family, resilience, and turning a tough personal journey into a day his mother will never forget.
