Ballon d’Or 2026: African Stars Make Their Mark as Harry Kane and Alexia Putellas Claim Top Honours
Africa may have missed out on the biggest Ballon d’Or prizes, but performances from Morocco's Achraf Hakimi, Malawi's Temwa Chawinga and Zambia's Barbra Banda ensured the continent had a presence at football's biggest individual awards ceremony.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony took place at London's Palladium on October 26, celebrating outstanding performances during the 2025–26 football season. While England captain Harry Kane and Spain's Alexia Putellas took home the men's and women's top honours respectively, African players also featured prominently across several categories.
Harry Kane Ends England's 25-Year Wait
Harry Kane emerged as the biggest winner of the evening, becoming the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the men's Ballon d’Or.
The Bayern Munich striker enjoyed an exceptional season, scoring 61 goals in 51 appearances for the German club across all competitions.
Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé, who placed second, and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, who finished third.
In the women's category, Barcelona's Alexia Putellas secured her third Women's Ballon d’Or, following her previous victories in 2021 and 2022.
Other winners included Lamine Yamal and Vicky López, who received the men's and women's Young Talent awards respectively. Spain's Unai Simón and Cata Coll won the goalkeeper awards, while Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona were recognised as the men's and women's Clubs of the Year.
Arsenal's Bukayo Saka also received the Sócrates Award for his humanitarian work.
Africa's Strongest Showing Comes from Women's Football
Although no African player claimed either main Ballon d’Or trophy, the continent recorded encouraging performances across the men's and women's rankings.
Morocco's Achraf Hakimi finished 13th in the men's category, making him Africa's highest-ranked male player. Senegal's Sadio Mané also featured in the rankings, finishing joint 29th.
Malawi's Temwa Chawinga finished 10th, making her the highest-ranked African player across both main categories. Zambia's Barbra Banda also secured recognition, finishing 18th.
The continent also had reason to celebrate in the men's Young Talent rankings. Ivory Coast's Yan Diomande finished fifth, Morocco's Ayyoub Bouaddi placed sixth, and Algeria's Ibrahim Maza secured ninth position.
Liberia's George Weah remains the only African footballer to have won the men's Ballon d’Or, following his historic triumph in 1995.
Social Media Reactions: Kane's Victory Divides Opinion
Harry Kane's victory generated discussions among football supporters, with opinions emerging over whether he deserved the award ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal.
While Kane's supporters pointed to his goalscoring achievements and contributions to Bayern Munich, others argued that Mbappé and Yamal had also presented strong cases for the award.
The ceremony also attracted attention beyond the winners, with Lamine Yamal's red-carpet appearance becoming a talking point among football followers.
The discussions demonstrated how the Ballon d’Or continues to generate debate among supporters, particularly when some of the world's most celebrated players compete for the same individual honour.
What the 2026 Awards Mean for African Football
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony delivered a mixture of celebration and unfinished business for African football.
While Hakimi and Mané represented the continent in the men's rankings, Chawinga and Banda demonstrated that African women are increasingly earning recognition on the international stage.
The emergence of young talents such as Diomande, Bouaddi and Maza also offers encouragement for the continent's footballing future.
However, with George Weah still the only African men's Ballon d’Or winner, the challenge remains to translate individual performances and growing international recognition into the ultimate individual achievement.
For African football supporters, the question is no longer simply whether the continent can produce another Ballon d’Or winner, but who will be the next player to make history?
