Bafana vs Kenya Qualifier Gives East and South Africa a Buzz
South Africa and Kenya will meet in a two-match 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series, beginning at Orlando Amstel Arena in Johannesburg on Friday, November 13. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00 local time. The return fixture will take place at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Tuesday, November 17.
The fixtures form part of Group D’s third and fourth matchdays and bring together South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane and Kenya coach Benni McCarthy, a former Bafana Bafana striker now leading Harambee Stars.
What is at stake
South Africa lead Group D with six points after beating Guinea 2-1 and Eritrea 5-0. With Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda automatically qualified as co-hosts, only one additional place at the 2027 finals is available from the group. South Africa need points to maintain their position and secure qualification.
Kenya are already assured of a place at the tournament, regardless of their group finish. The matches give McCarthy an opportunity to assess his squad and build competitive preparation. Kenya drew 1-1 with Eritrea before losing 1-0 to Guinea, leaving them with one point.
Players and storylines to watch
South Africa’s senior squad includes captain Ronwen Williams, midfielder Teboho Mokoena and forward Lyle Foster. Foster, defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and midfielder Thalente Mbatha return after missing the opening qualifying round. Siyanda Ndlovu is another name to watch after recent performances for Mamelodi Sundowns earned him a place in Mosimane’s selection.
For Kenya, captain Michael Olunga and defender Eric “Marcelo” Ouma are notable returns. Olunga has been recalled after not featuring for the national team since last year, while Ouma is returning after a lengthy absence caused by an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Their inclusion gives McCarthy experienced options.
The coaching contest is another storyline. McCarthy faces his country of birth for the first time as Kenya coach, while Mosimane will look to preserve South Africa’s perfect start. The first meeting is in Johannesburg, with Kenya hosting the return four days later.
For casual followers, the fixtures offer a clear contrast: South Africa are chasing the group’s remaining qualification place, while already-qualified Kenya are using the matches to test their squad ahead of the tournament.
