African teams chase history at U-17 World Cup
African women's football has something special to celebrate after four African countries secured places in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco. Nigeria, Ghana, hosts Morocco and Kenya all made it through, marking a historic moment for the continent.
For the first time, four African teams have reached the knockout stage of the competition. This is an improvement on the previous record of three teams, set in 2025. Although Zambia, Africa's fifth representative, failed to qualify after losing all three group matches, the overall performance has given African football fans plenty to celebrate.
Nigeria's Flamingos showed great determination to reach the last 16. They started their campaign with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Poland but quickly bounced back. A 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico gave them confidence before they stunned defending champions Korea DPR with an impressive 3-1 win. That result secured their place in the knockout stage and ended Korea DPR's long unbeaten run in the tournament.
Ghana's Black Maidens also showed fighting spirit. After a 3-0 defeat to Norway and a 3-3 draw against Brazil, they knew they needed a strong performance in their final group game. They delivered with a convincing 2-0 victory over Canada to book their place in the Round of 16.
Hosts Morocco also had a memorable moment after opening their campaign with a 4-0 win against New Zealand. Despite suffering defeats to Germany and Argentina, they qualified as one of the best third-placed teams.
Kenya's Junior Starlets made history of their own by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. After losing to China and the United States, they responded brilliantly with a 4-0 victory over Samoa to finish third in their group and qualify.
In the Round of 16, Nigeria continued their impressive run with a 2-1 victory over Mexico. Ghana also progressed after beating Argentina 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Both teams have now reached the quarter-finals, keeping African hopes alive.
Morocco's journey ended with a 6-0 defeat to Korea DPR, while Kenya lost 3-1 to Japan. However, their achievements should not be overlooked.
This CAF girls football milestone is about more than winning matches. It shows that young African girls have the talent and determination to compete at the highest level. With proper support, better facilities, quality coaching and more youth competitions, this progress can become the beginning of something even bigger.
The Africa U17 women 2026 campaign has created a moment to remember. Now, the important thing is to build on this success and give more girls across the continent the opportunity to shine.
